Fate: Vultures

Much like the infant bird depicted inside the CD cover, the members of California's Fate are young, extremely young (all in their late teens), but don't let that fool you, as their Metal Blade Records debut Vultures is an accomplished and powerful collection of technical death-core metal. Images of the Bay Area Thrash scene as well hints of some of the heavyweights of technical death metal (Beneath the Massacre, Decapitated, Cephalic Carnage, Krisiun, Origin, Behemoth...you get the picture) abound throughout Vultures, and even though the CD is kind of short (most of the 10 tracks clock in at the 2-3 minute range) it's an exciting ride all the way.

First thing you notice on the opening instrumental cut "Apostasn" is that Kyle Fishman and Brice Vuson can really play their guitars, as the two weave some wild shred lines around each other, leading into the brutal barrage of "Psychopathic Diary". It's just one crushing piece after another, each one filled with brutal, technical riffage (including plenty of massive breakdowns), Justin Krahn's hardcore styled barks and growls, and the relentless rhythms from drummer Jacob Durrett & bassist Davin Durrett. Other hot tracks include the trashy title track, the blast beat frenzy that is "Decapitate Delilah", and the complex closer "Ruins Of Necropolis". Honestly, though Vultures might not be the most unique sounding extreme metal CD you will hear this year, for a band that is as young as Fate is, there's no denying the talent and potential here, and my guess is these guys will continue to practice 10 hours a day in their bedrooms, play the occasional live show, and become one hell of a frightening metal beast in the years to come.
