Now here's a guy — independent New York-based electronic music composer and producer Andrei Lanes — who knows how to treat music journalists. His third CD, Fractal Collapse, arrived with a nice letter detailing his professional background, encouraging us to check out his electronic press kit for video links and interviews, and recommending which tracks we listen to first in order to get a better understanding of the man's sound and vision. Lanes even sent us a complete copy of the disc, with inserts and everything! Hell, I liked the guy without having even heard a note of his keyboard-centric and beat-driven music.
Sometimes tribal (opener "Eyeliner"), sometimes poppy ("Karmas Melody") and sometimes spacey ("Cheshire [Delta Edit]"), this stuff, he says, is "an alternative to almost anything else." His songs have most often been compared to those by techno outfits Orbital and the Chemical Brothers, but they also have their own character: warm and embracing one moment, cold and disconnected the next.
Worth noting is that Lanes devotes three of Fractal Collapse's 12 songs to women – including Evanescence's Amy Lee and two other no-doubt-hot women. The intricately woven "Amyland (Devoted to Amy Lee)" has no particular relevance to Lee's band other than the fact that it's dark, it's gothic and it's the best song here.
