If you know Neal Morse, you are no doubt fully aware that this talented musician just does not release material that isn't of the highest quality. Sola Scriptura and Beyond is his latest DVD, a stunning and highly enjoyable two-disc collection featuring a full show from early in 2007 in The Netherlands on the Sola Scriptura tour, as well as a 2006 show from Berlin when he and his band were touring behind the Question Mark album. For your dollar, you really can't go wrong with this set, as you get nearly 6 hours of spectacular progressive rock from one of the leaders in the genre over the past decade and a half.
Morse and his band are just bubbling with energy and enthusiasm during the Boerderij show, plowing through plenty of tracks from the latest release as well as a few Spock's Beard tunes (the medley of "The Good Don't Last /Open Wide The Flood Gates" is loads of fun), highlights being the "Question Mark Medley", complete with the amazing "The Temple of the Living God", 'The Creation", and of course the epic "Testimedley". Whether you accept Morse's lyrical ways these days or not, there's no denying the music is still as proggy as ever, complete with loads of keyboards, ripping guitar work, and lots of catchy vocal melodies. Though Neal's got the talented guitar player Paul Bielatowicz with him, who at times plays with a hint of Allan Holdsworth, Mr. Morse also lets loose with some searing electric guitar work of his own (Neal, we didn't know you had it in ya!), as well as an abundance of tasty keys, acoustic guitars, and his trademark vocal style.
Over on DVD 2, you get some fun backstage footage on the Sola Scriptura, plus nine tracks from the Germany show, which are just as insprired as the Netherlands set, but perhaps the footage is a little more raw. Toss in a nice little booklet filled with live photos and info, and you've got one gem of a DVD from one of the most important figures on today's prog rock scene.
