Extreme's III Sides To Every Story was such an impressive album, and one of my favorites of its kind. It wasn't the radio friendly album their previous releases were hence never had the success. The follow up Waiting For The Punchline wasn't a bad CD either, but for me III Sides To Every Story is easily their best release. Well now they are back many years later, vocalist Gary Cherone, guitarist Nuno Bettencourt, bassist Pat Badger and newly recruited drummer Kevin Figueiredo, with Saudades de Rock.. This is a fun CD full of catchy uplifting rock & funk. Nuno Bettencourt has always been a fine guitarist and as usual he is all over this one delivering another stellar performance. Opener "Star" is quite reminisant of Queen with its grooves and harmonies. "Comfortably Numb" is a nice funky track, while "Learn To Love" is an upbeat rocker with a cool solo. "Run" is one of the best songs here with a funky guitar/bass groove and catchy harmonies. "Slide" is another funk laden track that would fit fine on any Chili Peppers album. Songs like "Take U Alive" aren't your usual Extreme, especially with it's Rockabilly style, but is just one of the times on Saudades De Rockthat they are doing something different. Extreme have returned with a strong release, while not every tune is a killer, and for myself another III Sides To Every Story this isn't, but there are enough highlights on here to impress past fans and attract many new ones.
