Zelaya, Martin Mario: Calafia's Moods

The second CD Calafia's Moods from Southern California based acoustic folk guitarist Mario Martin Zelaya is an intelligently crafted set of eleven original songs (plus a cover of Steely Dan's "Do It Again") that have their roots firmly planted in the mellow folk rock style. However Zelaya also pushes the boundaries of the genre somewhat by incorporating elements of straight ahead rock ("Valcamonica"), blues ("Wolves"), and even tinges of Latin and bossa nova ("Off for Colors") into his music. Zelaya's voice exudes a warm, confident charm on these quirky, yet witty lyrical subjects. The music which is often performed by Zelaya alone is propelled by his clean percussive chords and brief, tasty solos, while other tracks find him augmenting his sound by adding arrangements to include a full band. Overall Calafia's Moods is relaxing and satisfying music perfectly suited for the coffee house crowd.
