Dawn of Demise: Hate Takes Its Form

Hate Takes Its Form is one of those CD's I really wanted to like. I mean, from the cover art, to the song titles, to the crushing riffs and overall extremity of the whole package, it's a death-core release that has a lot going for it. Problem is, Dawn of Demise, with all their good intentions, just don't seem to have found their identity quite yet. Given the fact that this is their debut, I think we can safely assume that this outfit will continue to grow into a death metal force to be reckoned with. Truthfully, there's lots of pulverizing stuff happening here, and the production of Jacob Hansen (great score guys!) is spot on, so it's really hard to criticize Hate Takes Its Form for what it is. My main beef is that we've heard similar type stuff from acts such as Aborted, Cannibal Corpse, Suffocation, and Despised Icon, so while it's evident that Dawn of Demise have boatloads of talent, it would be great to hear them deliver something that sets them apart from all the other extreme bands on the scene. For those who can't get enough raging death metal with a hardcore foundation, it's hard not to groove to crushers like "Degrading the Worthless", "Within the Flesh", and the blast beat frenzy of "Malice-Kill to Conform". Some may tire of Scott's endless use of incomprehensible grunts (let's face it, the guy doesn't offer up much in the form of variety here) but he seems to fit this sort of death/core/grind thing that the band is doing. The verdict? I smell some promise here, but Hate Takes Its Form seems like a result of a band playing to their influences, but still need a little seasoning to discover who they really want to be.
