Expect plenty of technical, brutal, gore-soaked death metal on the debut from California's Embryonic Devourment. This 10-song release starts off with a punishing spear to the gut on "Eating the Flesh of Gods", and after it impales you there it never lets up throughout the CD's 10 tracks of metal mayhem. Although there are some references here and there to bands such as Cryptopsy, Nile, and Gorguts, this remains a pretty original sounding release that has a lot to offer. Though the lyrics tend to veer towards the gore side of things, the music here is quite breathtaking at times, tracks like "Usurping The Secret Society" and "Fear of Reality Exceeds Fantasy" containing some really complex guitar & drum work that shows a band with no shortage of instrumental abilities. Lauren Pike (guitars) and Luke Boutiette (drums) especially shine throughout this release, and bassist/vocalist Austin Spence has the perfect growling attack to go with these monstrous pieces. Along with newer acts like Decrepit Birth, Origin, and Brain Drill, Embryonic Devourment have really made a statement here with Fear of Reality Exceeds Fantasy. If they can secure some killer production next time around, there's no telling what damage they can do.
