The best parts of this album? The grinding
anesthetizing buzz emanating from Eric Meyer's guitar
and the built-like-a-medeival-church rhythm section of
Scott Babel (drums) and Pete Stone (bass). Absolutely
on par with the best moment of recent Cathedral and at
times reaching the blackened grooves of Paranoid-era
Sabbath. The worst parts? At times vocalist Cody
Hubbard seems to be searching for his voice, swinging
from something close to Layne Staley with strep throat
to Rob Zombie with a cold. At other times it seems
that Brick Bath is a band still searching for that
perfect marriage between old and new schools. The good
news? There are enough strong moments here to warrant
your consideration as some time on the road and
between this album and the next should help further
solidify Brick Bath's sound. They're a tenacious bunch
and this is a good glimpse of what they could be
about. Probably not a future classic but not a
straight-to-bargain-bin affair, either.
