Mytho are a fairly new band from Italy, coming together only last year. This eponymous 3-track CD is issued by Musea (and purchaseable from their website) as a sampler for the band who are currently recording their first album. All I can say is, if they manage to keep up the standard shown here over a full-length album, then it's going to be some disc!!
The band comprise the three Machera brothers plus their friend Enzo Ferlazzo. Enzo and Antonio Machera play guitar synths whilst Marco and Fabrizio Machera form the beefy rhythm section. Marco does a good vocal to boot.
Together they create a rich soundscape: full of melody, crunchy guitar sound, good lead soloing, good keyboard sounds that is edging towards space-rock without perhaps being "spacey" enough. The production sound is crisp and clear, unlike that of some Italian progressive bands who seem to prefer a muddled sound - I prefer it this way.
"Alpha Centauri" is very catchy, melodic rock with a progressive influence, it would make a good single. "No Shadows in the Sun" and "Night Eyes" are slightly heavier without ever becoming manic - perhaps on occasions they could have loosened the leash a little more and really gone for it:! "No Shadows..." boasts a good rhythmic start and a fluent guitar solo in the coda, "Night Eyes" has some impressive pounding church organ sound blasts between the verses before developing into a heavy jam, though without ever pushing the pedal to the floor, and managed to retain a strong melodic element throughout - very effective.
Count me in, amici, looking forward to the album!!
