We really are getting spoiled with some very impressive DVD/CD releases
recently including this one from Dutch Gothic Rock Band Within Temptation .Given
the footage on this release it must have been such an amazing event to bare
witness to on the 7th of February of this year. Captured at the Ahoy Rotterdam, The
Netherlands in front of a 10,000 strong audience, this complete energetic live
performance by Within Temptation sees the band in full swing with the backing of
the Metropolis Orchestra, a choir and special guests. Sound and picture quality
wise this is one impressive release and there is also the option of Blue-Ray
version for those wanting the ultimate Within Temptation home experience. In all
honesty I probably say it's one of the, if not the best sounding, live
performance I've viewed on DVD as no expense has been spared. There are a ton of
extras, even another impressive earlier concert performance, minus the orchestra
on the second DVD plus two live audio cds. In addition, this collection also includes a very
nicely presented tour booklet.
I have many favorite female vocalists but Sharon Den Adel really is special,
her voice is so captivating and angelic- just listen to songs like "Memories" or
"Angels" two of my personal favourites here. Sharon gives a commanding performance taking the viewer through many of their popular tracks such as "Stand My Ground" and "What Have You Done". The other band members perform like clockwork fitting perfectly with the Metropole Orchestra. The guest performers really add to the
performance, like the duet with Anneke Van Giersbergen which is very moving, or
the combination of George Oosthoek's darker vocals on the heavier "The Other
Half (Of Me)".
There is so much extra footage contained in the bonus material to explore,
and combined with the main concert this makes Black Symphony a real treat for
Within Temptation fans or anyone who enjoys being drawn into well played music.
