The wait is almost over, Gamma Ray's latest live release seems to have been
coming out and talked about for ages, their last live release was 2003's
Skeletons In the Closet. This is a review of the double live CD, but there will
also be a DVD released, I for one can't wait to see it. Hell Yeah The Awesome
Foursome is also celebration of their first and successful headline tour of
America having only played in the States once before. Kai Hansen needs no
introduction, to Power Metal fans he is a true legend from his earlier works
with Helloween to Gamma Ray, not to mention Iron Savior and numerous guest
appearances he never fails to deliver some wonderful metal.
Captured in Montreal on May 6th 2006, long time and newer fans will find
plenty to enjoy there is a great selection of older tracks like "The Silence"
from their 1990 debut Heading To Tomorrow up to newer tracks such as
"Fight" off the 2005 release Majestic amongst the eighteen tracks they
perform here. Plus there is an extra four off their latest studio album Land
Of Free II as a bonus taken from another more recent concert, January 2008
in Barcelona during their tour with Helloween. Great to see "Empress" and
speedster "Into The Storm" as a bonus tracks, these catchy numbers are two of my
favorites from their recent work. Gamma Ray have retained the same line-up of
Kai Hansen - guitars and vocals, Henjo Richter - guitars , Dirk Schlachter -
bass and Daniel Zimmermann - drums, since 1998 no wonder they sound so
impressive and perform like clockwork.
Vocally Kai is in good form and there is plenty of awesome guitar work from
himself and the very capable Henjo Richter. This live recording really does
deliver just crank up your favorite tracks and listen to how impressive and
potent they sound. This should keep fans happy till their next studio release,
hopefully next year.
