Seventeen releases over nineteen years fans can't complain about that for
consistency. Tales Of The Crown is Axel Rudi Pell's new release for 2008.
Ten tracks with music that you've come to expect from the Pell band. Johnny
Gioeli handles vocal duties, Axel Rudi Pell all guitars, Ferdy Doernberg
keyboards, Volker Krawczak bass and the ever reliable master on the drums with
an impressive list of bands he has performed with, Mike Terrana. (Incidentally -
if you're another Mike Terrana fan check out his solo material like Shadows
Of The Past it's really very good and another example of what a diverse and
talented drummer he is.)
Tales Of The Crown is your classic melodic metal album full of hooks,
Pell performs multiple cool solos and Johnny Gioeli's vocals suit the material
perfectly. "Higher" is a memorable pounding track with a fine chorus and
imposing solo, there are fun rockers like "Ain't Gonne Win" and "Riding On An
Arrow" to faster tracks like "Angle Eyes" and "Buried Alive". You'll find the
ballads like "Touching My Soul" and even an Instrumental track with "Emotional
Echoes" which presents a nice change and a spirited showcase for Axel. "Tales Of
The Crown", title and longest track clocking in at over eight minutes, is a
great song, a very appealing exhibition from Axel. If I was to pick my favorite
tracks on Tales Of The Crown I would take "Higher", "Ain't Gonna Win",
"Emotional Echoes","Riding On An Arrow" and "Tales Of The Crown" but I did enjoy
the others as I'm sure fans will.
