The re-issue of this classic metal album gives a whole new audience a chance
to hear what we in Michigan have known for years. From the beginning, Halloween
is a band that just rocks! This underground cult classic is a much sought after
release by collectors of heavy metal. At least now you don't have to pay the
outrageous cost on eBay for the original album.
Here's the opportunity to learn about one of the premier bands to come out of
the Detroit heavy metal scene. For those already familiar with them, it is a
chance to get reacquainted with a group that helped to make Michigan one of the
rock and roll capitols of the United States.
They have always been a band to choose their own path. That is one of the
reasons they stayed independent and never signed with a major label. To them,
the music is the most important thing and they decided to follow the much harder
road of self promotion and distribution instead of losing the integrity that
fueled the band. This music is what the band wanted you to hear. Sure, it is raw
and the does not have the benefits of a major studio, but it also doesn't have
the tampering of outside hands either.
I heard it said how Halloween sounds like so many other bands out at the
time. Well if the truth be told, it was really a matter of how many bands at the
time sounded like Halloween. I can remember how putting the needle to the vinyl
on this record would send chills up and down the spine. Brian's high pitched
vocals and original guitarist Rick Craig churning out some of the most
infectious riffs, this album was one that I truly wore out. With its spooky
theme that takes you into the world of ghost, goblins and witches, it is a rock
and roll excursion through a Saturday night spook show double feature. With the
creaking doors, the eerie backwards lyrics and frightening stories, Don't
Metal With Evil is to rock and roll what Elvira and Sir Graves Ghastly is to
the horror movie genre. It is good campy fun with a solid background rooted in
heavy metal.
Sounds of broken glass and a drum roll by Bill Whyte, followed by the bass
thumping of legendary George Neal is the intro that greets you. By the time Rick
Craig tears into the opening number Busted, you already know that this is going
to be an excursion on the rock and roll express. When Brian Thomas wails "Let's
Go" you are fully in headbanging mode! From this furious beginning it is a
relentless onslaught of metal that takes you into every dark corner and makes
you want to check under the bed before your feet hit the floor.
For any fan of heavy metal, this album is a real treat. For those that are
interested in the history of rock and roll, this is an absolute must have. For
anyone else, this is just great fun from start to finish. Known as Detroit's
Heavy Metal Horror Show, Halloween is one of the bands that make you realize
just how much fun this music is.
