Dantesco: Pagano

Candlemass meets Mercyful Fate in Puerto Rico? That's sorta how this Spanish-language doom-metal band hails itself. Erico La Bestia's gruff vocals (can that be his real name?) come nowhere close to reaching the heights of Mercyful Fate's King Diamond, but there are plenty of evil undercurrents on Pagano — beginning with the ugly man-beast on the cover trouncing an angel and continuing with song titles that translate to "Your Blood Is Mine" and "Exorcist" — that are countered with mid-paced aggressive riffs and haunted by gothic background vocals. This really isn't much different from Viking metal sung in foreign tongues. But it's almost necessary to dig doom and not mind the blasphemous imagery or the retreading of musical ideas to fully enjoy the overly long (72 minutes) Pagano.
