A product of its times, the 1986 debut from Chicago's Diamond Rexx revels in the rawer side of American glam metal: meat-headed singing from Nasti Habits, the most basic of riffing from S. St. Lust and dull thudding from a rhythm section featuring guys with normal names. Originally released by Island Records and now reissued as a limited-edition digipak, Land of the Damned is noisy and nasty, occasionally melodic and hopped up on loads of testosterone. Think Alice Cooper meets Motley Crue — but not as, um, classy.
Diamond Rexx eventually went on hiatus during the grunge years and returned with a heavier, sludgy sound in the new millennium, singing about oppressive governments and pedophilic priests. But on Land of the Damned, this quartet wants nothing more than to bitch about not being rich and then kick in your face. Diehard Eighties headbangers may want this in their collection (if it's not already), but the rest of us can probably live without it.
