While talking with the band they told me that when they play live the group is usually considered the lightest heavy band on the bill or the heaviest light sounding group. While listening to their debut EP it's not hard to understand their choice of words. Musically, then remind me of a group like the terrific band Better Left Unsaid or maybe In This Moment without the female vocals. Then can be very heavy with the screams and growls of Lucas D'Agata mixed with the dual guitars of Derek Troxell and Scott Horner providing a blistering bit of metal mayhem on songs like "The Room" or "In The Wake". But even within those tunes they manage to, with a twist of a phrase, turn the song into a melodic piece that is in stark contrast to their metalcore roots.
This is an approach that works extremely well. The diversity in styles keeps you wondering what they are going to throw at you next! It might even be a little piano undercurrent like in the very progressive sounding "Heal Me". As anyone who knows me will tell you, I most certainly am not apposed to some serious headbanging, but at my age it is nice to give it a rest once in awhile too!
This EP gives you so much in a short span of time that you will be praying for a full release. According to the guys in the band; this will become a reality soon and I will be among the first to own it. The Current State Of Being is a disc that lays the groundwork for whichever way this talented group of musicians decide to go. Their range of styles is a refreshing change that is thoroughly entertaining, though they stray from their heavy metal roots they never leave them entirely.
My one complaint about the album is in the packaging. The notes from the band are behind the CD holder and are very hard to read. With a bit of deciphering, there are some interesting tidbits in there. Not only do you get a run down on some of the finer eateries in Texas, you will learn of a beast that should be avoided at all cost! The Milk Sasquatch! The band told me the story of this menacing creature but I will leave it up to them to inform the general public as it is a story not for the squeamish!
