This is a re-release of German band Sculpture's self titled gothic metal debut, which was originally released in 1999 on Nuclear Blast, now reissued by Metal Mind Productions. Sculpture started out in 1997; unfortunately things didn't work out, as the group disbanded in 1999. Given the efforts they have conveyed here it was indeed a loss of potential, the only positive thing being it won't cost a fortune to purchase their complete discography. If you can get a copy of this release it's certainly worth a listen, beware though it's a limited edition of only 2000 copies.
Sculpture was formed by guitarist, keyboardist and vocalist Lothar "Lotte" Frost; Lothar recruited vocalist Stefan Hertrich, drummer Thomas and bass player Hans Mappes. Hans was involved in a serious motorcycle accident that may have caused the breakup, according to the cover sleeve notes.
"Over" is a good starter, with nice use of keyboards, and the catchy track "Deniers" has an effective drum fill that's repeated constantly before settling into the chorus. "Spring Of Water" commences with a cool riff and is another good track to look out for. You don't have to be a gothic metal fan to enjoy Sculpture's music. Those fond of well performed metal will find this easy to digest, and quite simply Sculpture's only release is a captivating, well produced and diverse album.
