Farflung: A Wound In Eternity

A Wound In Eternity is the seventh full length journey to the cosmos from L.A. based space rockers Farflung. The band which is centered around three principal players, Tommy Grenas on vocals & synths and the twin guitar assault from Michael Esther and Ryan Kirk, have been crafting their unique blend of heavy, psychedelic sounds since the mid 90's.

Opening track "Unborn Planet" explodes out of the gate with an impressive sense of urgency. Essentially this one is a mid tempo barnstormer, propelled by plenty of spirited guitars and the odd synth flourish. This segues seamlessly into "Endless Drifting Wreck" another up tempo composition which finds the band slowly expanding their sonic palate somewhat, 'drifting' into distinctly more Hawkwind influenced territory. Swirling guitars drenched in endless amounts of reverb and delay eventually collide headlong with the delicate, orchestral synth washes about two minutes in, before the gears are once again shifted into overdrive, climaxing in an orgy of supreme guitar riffage. A lot of the music here can certainly be traced back to space rock pioneers Hawkwind yet A Wound In Eternity doesn't comes across as merely a Hawkwind knock off. This disc also reveals Farflung's apparent admiration for early Pink Floyd for example on "Like It Never Has Been", while the heavier aspects of the bands sound could be comparable to the sonic, stoner sludge of Monster Magnet.

The final four compositions "Ix", "Silver Shrooms", "Invincible" and "Precognition" are alone worth the price of this disc. They are extremely effective due large in part to the bands desire to stretch out a bit more, and these tracks which all seem interconnected (as does pretty much the whole album) provide all the evidence necessary to convince you that Farflung have indeed mastered art of tension and release. Hypnotic moods are slowly molded into shape only to be broken down and reconstructed again from scratch. A great example of this can be found on "Ix". The mood of the song is established gradually through various different effects and eerie sounding keyboards which are coupled with low, emotionless, monotone vocals. The feelings of dread increase and the listener can feel the tension building as the volume increases slowly before eventually taking it to the next level.

A Wound In Eternity is a thrilling musical and cerebral journey to the deepest reaches of time and space. If you're a fan of modern psychedelic / stoner rock then Farflung has got just the right dose for you.
