Celestine: At The Borders Of Arcadia

Iceland is NOT one of the places that you normally think of when it comes to Metal, but this is where the band Celestine calls home. Celestine's debut, 6 song EP, At The Borders Of Arcadia is short, yet powerful display of what Metal in today's world can sound like.

Steeped in Meshuggah styled polyrhythm's of heavy groove, Celestine are a force to be reckoned with. This 5 piece band can simply groove and grind with the best of 'em. From CD opener, "Despair (and)" with it's calm before the storm type of deceiving intro that leads headlong into powerful riffing and screaming (even though totally incoherent) complete with several breakdown sections that flow directly into the next track, "Witness (The)".

At The Borders Of Arcadia is a powerful debut and I hope to hear more from Celestine in the future. If you like your Metal heavy with a lot groove and time changes, then check out these Icelandic guys. Celestine does a great job of making some very epic sounding songs that clock in at around 4 minutes or so, which is very uncommon for the Metal genre. They keep in short and sweet and that is a welcome change.

The only knock at all on these guys would be that I can't understand a god damned word that they say in ANY of these songs!!!! But then again, I DO love the hell out of Meshuggah and I have no idea what they are saying either! If you're into bands like Meshuggah, Neurosis and Isis, pick this up, it's a great beginning for a new band.
