Avant-garde, odd, mildly amusing are just a few of the words that come to mind when trying to describe Mute Socialite's debut CD, More Popular Than Presidents and Generals (Dephine Knormal Musik). However musical is not one of the words that I'd use.
This CD contains 12 tracks of ambient noise, rattles, bangs and I'm sure the kitchen sink is in there too, however a resemblance of a song is no where to be found. The "music" contained within would be much better suited for a cartoon soundtrack than being passed off as a regular music CD. Anyone remembering the theme music for the great cartoon, "Space Ghost: Coast To Coast", will remember the eclectic musical styling's of the great Sonny Sharrack. Well Mute Socialite aspires to have that type of imagination and ability to wrap it all up into a nice musical & enjoyable listening package. This however is NOT that.
Mute Socialite has produced a confusing and just plain hard to listen to CD here. I'm not sure what they were after with this messy, noisy record, but I'd have to say it misses whatever mark that they were after, although I will give them a point for being a little entertaining, in a cartoonish sort of way. If this were a cartoon soundtrack, it would be much more pleasurable.
