Alaskan metalcore veterans 36 Crazyfists are back with a new label and a new album, The Tide and Its Takers, out now on Ferret Records. With production handled by guitartist Steve Holt and Andy Sneap once again doing the mixing and mastering, The Tide and Its Takers is a great sounding modern metal CD, perhaps the band's heaviest outing to date. Filled with plenty of crushing riffs, stampeding breakdowns, an effective mix of clean vocals, shouts, and growls, plus lots of catchy melodies, this is a release that should please all fans of the genre and hopefully gain the band new listeners at the same time. Highlights include the bombastic opener "The All Night Lights", the hardcore tinged "Clear the Coast" (which features some tasty pinch harmonics), the irresistible melodies of "Waiting On a War", and the relentless aggression of "Absent Are The Saints", Brock Lindow's vocals ranging from brutal growls to engaging clean passages as he shows his full arsenal of styles.
Though The Tide and Its Takers is not going to win any awards for originality, for a solid slice of modern metalcore, you can't go wrong here. If you can appreciate a myriad of vocals styles (both extreme and melodic), crunchy guitar work, good production values, and catchy songs, this little metal release should find its way into your CD player.
