Dark Funeral: Diabolus Interium

What a treat. On their third full-length, Swedish diabolists and pig's head mutilators Dark Funeral deliver their choicest effort yet. The usual strengths apply: A chromatic lace of razor wire guitar strung through symphonic surge (attained miraculously without keyboards) --courtesy founder Lord Ahriman and bassist-turned second guitar Dominion; Emperor Magus Caligula's gutteral benedictions and sturdy bass, augmented by hyperblast percussion from session player Matt Modin, and oh yeah -- unrelenting blasphemy. In addition to the favored shred, mid-tempo fare like "Goddess of Sodomy" ventures into Filth-y territory for a femme fatale one-off. This is the follow-up even fans of the "Teach Your Children to Worship Satan" EP will find new grounds upon which to cherish Dark Funeral, which is fast developing into an outfit to make the old guard nervous. Of the Abyss production nothing need be said. Treats for the wired include PC/MAC videos for "An Apprentice of Satan" and "The Secret of the Black Arts." A fire-breathing, spiky triumph.

2007 Re-Issue with Bonus Disc

This 2001 release from Dark Funeral now finds itself remastered and reissued by Regain Records with a bonus CD of goodies. Diabolus Interium was produced by Peter Tagtgren at the Abyss Studios (he's worked pretty extensively with the band over the years), so the album has a similar feel to most of their releases. Basically, with Dark Funeral you aren't going to get many surprises, just plenty of unrelenting black metal. That's the formula here as well, but this time around the band really put together some memorable and ferocious songs, with arrangements that are tight as all hell and quite brutal. Razor sharp tunes like "Goddess of Sodomy", "An Apprentice Of Satan", and "Armageddon Finally Comes" are fueled with all the Dark Funeral trademarks, but the band really seems to be on top of their game here, with Caligula's blood drenched vocals, Lord Ahriman & Dominion's manic guitars, and the crashing drum blasts from Matte Modin, all firing on every cylinder.

The bonus CD is the EP Teach Children to Worship Satan, and features "An Apprentice of Satan", plus a few cover songs which sees the band play in some different styles. "The Trial" is a remake of a King Diamon song, and "Dead Skin Mask" a ploddingly heavy version of the Slayer classic, both tunes showing that Dark Funeral can handle more thrash type material. The band does their take on the Sodom staple "Remember the Fallen", and "Pagan Fears" sees them tackle a song from black metal legends Mayhem.

The booklet contains photographs of the band in all their evilness, as well as full lyrics. Quite the good package overall, so many kudos to Regain Records for once again fulfilling their committment to excellence.
