Now this is what I'm talking about! The Mediaskare Records debut for San Diego's Burning the Masses is a superhuman blast of technical & brutal death metal, and above all has plenty of groove to boot. What's more is these jokers are all still in their teens, which is really mindblowing when you hear the precision and tightness they display on these dozen songs. First off, the flailing drum work of Chason Westmoreland is hard ro resist, whether he's blasting away with reckless abandon or laying down some tricky grooves, he's able to hook the listener in with every beat. Then you have the acrobatic guitar playing from Chris Valenzuela & Arde Ostowari, two young axe-slingers who really know how to weave some intricate riffs and blinding solos, and there are plenty of both here on this CD. Add in the rumbling bass of Jake Pace and the evil growls & screams of David Montenegro, and you have one formidable unit.
Plenty of highlights here, from the crushing mosh-mayhem of "Cyanide", the technical mania of "Paroxysm Of Fear", to the out of control mayhem that is "Arms Raised, Eyes Closed" complete with inhuman vocals, complex guitar work, and relentless blasting, showing the full extent of their death metal powers. They are at their grinding best on "Euphoria Ends", a real burner that again shows their helacious groove, and you can hear some of their ethnic background on the progressive "Galactic Abduction", one of the few instrumentals here that will really wow those into guitar oriented metal.
Impressive from start to finish, Mind Control is sure to please fans of recent releases by Psycroptic, Beneath the Massacre, The Faceless, All Shall Perish, Origin, Decrepit Birth, and Spawn of Possession. Brutal, technical, but with plenty of melody and groove, this is a young band that has a huge future staring them in the mirror.
