If only you could hear what I am hearing right now. But you can! This is one of those times when you get giddy from the music that is blasting out of the speakers. Sweden's Lava Engine is to progressive music what Beethoven is to classical. With a flair and style that is uniquely their own, this band has the tools to make a bold statement in their chosen field. With a gutsy approach they bring you a blend of styles that is unparalleled.
A stylish guitar opening the album, sweeping into the magnificent song "Interiors", Lava Engine is just starting to boil! Ronnie Jaldemark on guitar makes the music soar to heights reserved for the elite bands in this category. This is just the first song in the 4 tune EP but it alone is enough to make you realize that this band is far more than your ordinary group of musicians. There is a sense of dynamics and dramatics that is sorely missing in most of today's music. From glorious melody to searing metal heat, "Interiors" is the introduction to the band that will make you wonder just where these guys have been hiding.
When they next turn to the almost jazzy and light "Heroes", it will become as clear as day that Lava Engine has some great music to offer us all. Once again you will be thrilled by the complexity of the song structure and the full rich sound that they produce.
Next comes the moody "The Kill". A tantalizing slow melodic beginning leads to an absorbing melody that is simply beautiful and grandiose. You can hear the influences that they have listed on the web page such as Porcupine Tree and Marillion. They weave a textured work of art that is another example of what this band has to offer.
To finish up this EP, yes, they have saved the best for last. The 10 minute plus opus "Blood" will leave you with a ravishing hunger for more! The soundscape they create is as breath taking and awe inspiring as any recent release. They do not try to overwhelm you with technical prowess, instead they dazzle you with superior melody and dynamics.
The one thing I have yet to mention is the vocals of Magnus Florin. He has a way of taking you on these terrific flights of fancy with a voice that is almost like a storyteller. He can be soothing and when he needs to be, forceful and dynamic. This is a singer that knows what it takes to bring a song to life! And oh what songs he has to work with! This is the beginning of a group that can't miss. There's just too much quality here to think anything else!
