Brutal is, as brutal does. Carnifex's latest CD, The Diseased and the Poisoned (Victory Records), is if nothing else just that, brutal. The trouble is, brutality alone, does not a good record make.
Carnifex haven't reinvented the wheel with The Diseased and the Poisoned, quite the opposite, with the best case scenario being this would be best suited as background music while doing something else. Nothing jumps out from the speakers to grab you or make you pay attention. This is a sub par effort with average "I can't understand a word you're saying" Death Metal caterwauling and some decent musical efforts along the way. The heavy mid section of "In Coalesce With Filth And Faith" was about the highlight for me.
With 12 songs clocking in at around 35 minutes, it is a quick CD for sure, which I was happy about. If you're into run of the mill Deathcore type of stuff this might tickle your fancy, but mine was not even scratched. This CD doesn't suck, it's just not very entertaining, probably best suited for music that you play while getting dressed to go out and you are in another room.
