From Virginia comes the blackened thrash act The Day of the Beast, their self-titled debut out now on Canonical Hours. Upon first listen to this blistering assault, you almost feel like this album was recorded in the early 80's, as there's plenty of classic styled thrashing going on here but with a layer of modern black metal floating over the top. Steve's vocals are what give the band that black/death metal feel, his effective growls adding that pure evil feel to tracks like "He Who Shuns the Light" and the excellent "Beyond Choronzon". Elsewhere, look for massive riffs on "The Crawling Chaos", technical blackened thrash ala Arsis on "De Vermis Mysteriis", and the juggernaut "Upon the Throne", a near 7-minute extravaganza of furious thrash with huge riffs from Eric and relentless rhythms from the team of bassist Justin and drummer Jeremy.
Yes, there's a lot to like here, 37 minutes of pure metal, old school at times but still with plenty of modern elements that will surely satisfy all listeners. Even the cover art has that sort of early Slayer-ish feel...don't overlook this one folks.
