Maksymenko, Michael: Business Cide

The banner raised by Zappa still flaps: the idea of No Commercial Potential persists now as a brand, offering carefully developed products to that segment of the population identifying itself as non-commercial. Yes, change comes slowly, if at all. And selling by those who do not wish to sell to those who do not wish to be sold to remains a Paradox of the current and syptomatic convulsions of what can only be called the late stage Tourette's of Capitalism.

The music here covers a 12 or 13 year period (inclusive counting?) that seems very much in the wake of Zappa's earliest work and that of the talent list of his Bizarre label. Maksymenko is clearly influenced by Beefheart – untethered here by the organizing principals of American Blues that provided the blind stitching of Trout Mask – and perhaps even the genuinely empathetic lunatic ramblings of Wild Man Fischer. No trace of the GTOs however.

Maksymenko's music is a narrative music: the brittle and jagged compositions career from hysteria to frantic primal therapies, situational, story-obsessed and happily exuberant, he may have here accomplished placing the tongue in the cheek that was the Cheerful Insanity of Giles, Giles & Fripp. There is clatter and staccato everywhere: sharpened toys falling in gouts onto metallic surfaces, stone surfaces, rubber surfaces and occasional areas of demurely exposed soft tissue, wires pulled tight enough to effortlessly slice hard cheese, set in the ambient convolutions of small, cramped spaces which add a bright, coy and sadistic slap to every utterance. Structured chaos is a difficult end to obtain, and Maksymenko, an unnatural drummer, displays some seemingly unerring and perhaps even unconscious ability to hold things together by implication rather than in fact. Or by shouting. Business Cide is an overdosed high-wire act that generates its very own flap.
