Banished From Inferno: Banished From Inferno

Banished From Inferno is a Spanish/Swedish band that got together to play old school styled death/black metal along the lines of Hellhammer, Celtic Frost, Obituary, and Darkthrone. The band is made up of Rober (Machetazo), Rogga Johansson (Paganizer, Ribspreader, Demiurg, Edge of Sanity), and Phlegeton (Wormed, Godus, Human Mincer), all players who have been around the scene for a bit. This EP was even mastered by the legendary Dan Swano at Unisound Studios in Sweden. From the first track "Aurora Inferno" you can see their love for Celtic Frost, as the first half of the song is creepy soundscapes before the band rampages into their version of the CF classic "Into Crypts of Rays". "Storm Apokalypse" also starts off as an atmospheric spook fest which then morphs into a head banging crusher of an instrumental. The Celtic Frost/Hellhammer comparisons are again apparent here. "Calaveras" is good old fashioned Swedish death metal, rampaging riffs and pounding drum blasts complement Rogga's evil growls, a formula that continues on the crushing "Stench of Evil Thru the Mist". Here the band take their Edge of Sanity-meets-Opeth style to new levels of monstrous death metal, simply a killer song on many levels. Closing number "The Solemn Bleakness" continues on with the bludgeoning, but this one is not quite as compelling as the previous two tracks despite some breakneck riffs and manic drum work. Overall Banished From Inferno is a band that shows quite a bit of promise, and their debut full-length CD should be something to look forward to.
