Deadbird: Twilight Ritual

If there is a gauge for sludge factor in bands, Deadbird would rank somewhere near the La Brea Tar Pits. If you can musically picture someone falling into this goo and occasionally trying to crawl their way out, only to get sucked back in by the oozing mire, you will have a clear understanding of Deadbird.

Deadbird's journeys to the world above the primordial soup that is the basis of their sound is something that gives these guys a substantial leg up on the competition in the race for the sludge/doom metal crown. Clearly evident in songs like "death of the self" and "the riverbed", unheard of characteristics such as clean vocals and heavy yet melodic passages take you out of the sludgefest for a quick breath before you slide back into the quagmire. This is the X-factor that makes Deadbird stand out.

Don't think for one minute though that these guys take the light road at all. This disc is as low down and grimy as it gets. With the fuzzy distortion filled guitars driving you slowly to the brink, fans of groups like Rwake (former band of guitarist Chuck Schaaf) and Eyehategod will find some new heroes. With six tracks clocking in at just over forty seven minutes, there is plenty of hardcore riffage to go around. For the moments when you want to blast you senses with the heavy electric shock therapy that Tony Iommi created, give Deadbird a try. They are most definitely a cut above the mass of bands in this genre.
