This instrumental French-Canadian trio — two men and one woman — claim to draw influences from Frank Zappa, Dream Theater, Pain of Salvation, Gentle Giant, Genesis and Chick Corea. That makes sense, considering the crunchy jazz and dark rock that Néodyme makes. But I just don't hear the references to Ayreon and King Diamond that the members of Néodyme insist are there...
Regardless, Ensemble Derriere La Lune is a persuasive debut, full of colorful compositions rich in textures and layers. "Refuge" features a stunning violin solo and powerful orchestral arrangements countered by heavy guitar riffs, while the chugging "Labyrinthite Aigüe," the Middle-Eastern-flavored "Apocalypse" and the forboding "Perceptions" reveal greater depth. Néodyme would be wise to pursue more songs like these, which set it apart from other complex and dense instrumental outfits.
We'll hear soon enough what this trio will do next, as Néodyme reportedly already has enough material for a second album.
