Daedalus: The Never Ending Illusion

The Never Ending Illusion is the new CD from Progressive Metal band Daedalus. 'Never Ending' sounds like the list of quality bands and releases in the genre... there are so many it just keeps going on and on, and wish I had 'never ending' funds to purchase them all.

Daedalus is an Italian band with inspiration coming from acts including the likes of Iron Maiden, Dream Theater, Queen and Rush. Daedalus's first release Leading Far From A Mistake was in 2003, and the time between releases has been spent getting the ten tracks on their follow up The Never Ending Illusion just right. The band had the added benefit of input from the very experienced Roland Grapow (Masterplan, Ex Helloween) who mixed the tracks.

I haven't heard their debut but from what I've read most opinions suggests this album is the better release of the two. Launching with keyboard dominated instrumental "Waiting For The Dawn", the next offering "Perfect Smile" shows the guitar of Andrea Torretta takes over. Title track "The Never Ending Illusion", one of the CD's standouts, is full of heaviness, complexity and diversity, as is "The Dancers", another good song. I can certainly hear Dream Theater's influence on The Never Ending Illusion, for myself this tended to work against the album a bit and turned me off at times. While Daedalus aren't in that same league as those legendary proggers, who knows, maybe one day they will be, especially if they keep stepping up with each release as they seem to have done here.
