I'm sure I saw a review somewhere about Fairytale Abuse and found it interesting. When this promo came in, I tried to look for it without success.
Pretty nice and dramatic cover art isn't it? Well, it reflects the music to be heard on this disc. Nothing outstanding, not a masterpiece either, just a solid melodic Black Metal album. Fairytale Abuse falls in the same category as bands like Cradle of Filth, Dimmu Borgir and Old Man's Child, without really being some sort of copy cat. They are very good musicians, who can play well and composed serious Symphonic Black Metal music. The songs are melodic, catchy at times, theatrical and will get your feet following the beat. Perhaps this is not exactly what you'd expect from this type of music, and I understand / agree on that point. The production is very good, not over-produced, so you still get the raw energy of the crunchy guitar /bass work. Lots of Symphonic keyboards plus additional piano parts are forming the lush harmonies on this release. In a few instances though, the keys are a bit cheesy sounding. Fortunately, they do a great job in the atmospheric department. The rasps and growls are quite theatrical in more than one occasion, especially when combined with wicked effects. The powerful production brings the pummeling drums a bit too upfront for my own taste, although not in excess. All in all, Perversions of Angel is a pleasant Symphonic Black Metal opus.
