Gore: Hart Gore / Mean Man's Dream

Here we have a two CD release from a three piece Dutch band that were known as Gore, in fact their first two releases Hart Gore (1986) and Mean Man's Dream (1987) now re-issued on Southern Lord Records. The CD's have been remastered but still retain a very raw sound, probably as they were both originally recorded live in the studio with no overdubbing. The booklet contains an extensive look into Gore's history with rare pictures.

Extreme metal is what came to mind, after seeing the band name, cover art (A heart with a sword through it) and song titles. I was also expecting some form of vocals, but they didn't eventuate even though there are lyrics supplied, much to my surprise Gore play instrumental heavy rock. How often do you see lyrics for a song in the booklet that are not actually used? Maybe a good one for your next Karaoke night. There is a considerable amount of material to digest, with forty three tracks from studio to live recordings, many of which are repeated in different settings. The line-up for these albums were drummer Danny Arnold, Pieter De Sury on guitar and Marij Hel on bass. Gore's music isn't too complex, just mostly slow to mid paced tracks with catchy heavy rocking riffs and grooving drums. Given the age and content of these albums, I certainly wouldn't be surprised if Gore's music influenced other bands that would follow.

Heavy Rock instrumental releases aren't exactly easy to find and this package does offer pretty good value, especially to those drawn to the style of music.
