Australia, the land of nasty drop bears and ass kicking Kangaroos, we are certainly not known for Extreme metal, more so for the late Steve Irwin on a mission, franticly chasing down killer crocodiles and venomous snakes, or rolling around in the nests of bad ass lizards. The there's winning the America's cup and years later sinking during the same event (not really a good look). Lastly, Mel Gibson's Mad Max, still our best movie, not that recent over the top epic called "Australia".
Thanks to the likes of Psycroptic things are changing. The Amenta are another band to look out for, one glance at the terrorist- like cover art and severe song titles amid those on their new extreme metal CD nOn, one gets the feeling this album isn't going to be a gentle experience.
nOn is full of brutal screams, metallic riffs and stomping drums with full speed kick drum/snare combos like those on "Spine". Sound familiar? Well this band adds a big difference, a multi layered industrial style with electronic elements in their sound. "The Amenta's new album pushes technology to its absolute limits" as the cover slip reads, don't know about that, but it is different, The Amenta are going further with their music which may help them get noticed in such a competitive music genre. There are quite a few extra contributors with two drummers, six vocalists, two bass players plus others on this powerful extreme album. I haven't heard Fear Factory in years but it reminds me somewhat of their earlier work, pretty hard not to, after all Fear Factory are the pioneers of industrial death metal. The Amenta's nOn isn't a bad effort at all, but I do prefer Psycroptic's Observant when it comes to recent Australian extreme metal.
