Avant-garde is a French term to begin with, so when applied to the group We Insist! it is only fitting, as this band from France is anything but mainstream.
Quirky is the term that comes to mind when listening to this album. Trying to flex their freeform jazz muscle while at the same time hoping to capture the ear of the rock fans, We Insist! comes off more like a group that wants to pander to the musical elitists who prefer style over substance. With a few exceptions such as the heavy "Early Recollections" and the unusual but appealing "An Architect" this disc tries to be "too cool" for it's own good.
There are some who will gobble up this disc without question. The free form style is very appealing to many and We Insist! has made this disc much more accessible than their previous offerings. There is a charm to it but that alone is not enough to make me want to listen to this album very often. I will dust it off every once in awhile but only as an appetizer, there is not enough meat here for the main course!
