Dodsferd: Death Set the Beginning of My Journey

Talk about a painful listening experience...that's right, I'm talking about the latest release from black metal act Dosdferd, titled Death Set the Beginning of My Journey, out now on Moribund Records. Dodsferd is the creation of one Wrath, who handles all the vocals and instruments on this pummeling black 'n' roll juggernaut. Musically, this is pretty standard fare, your normal concoction of manic tremelo picked guitar riffs, thunderous drum blasts, all delivered at a violent, furious pace. Problem is, Wrath's vocals are absolutely horrible. That's not to say that black metal vocals in general are a thing of beauty, but at times this guy sounds like a wounded animal howling into the night, and all you want to do is put him out of his misery. Forget about understanding a word of his rantings & ravings, it's just pure, incoherent hatred and screaming, plain and simple, and delivered in such a way that it drowns out the music completely. Song titles, as you can see below, are one line statements of pure evil, anger, and hatred, and Wrath uses these tunes as vehicles for his maniacal blasphemizations. Funny thing is, some folks have a problem with acts like Dark Funeral, Gorgoroth, and Marduk, but quite frankly, that's pretty melodic stuff compared to this noisy, garbled, twisted mess of an album. Proceed with caution.
