First, a little history...
Blood Stained Dusk are a US black metal band from Alabama, a place not necessarily known for its extreme metal, and certainly not Scandinavian styled black metal. Their career began in 1999 with the demo Thy Legions Reign Over Christendum, and after many live shows and a few CD's, the band prepared to head into the studio to record Black Faith Inquisition in 2005 when tragedy struck. Guitarist/vocalist Dageth was killed in a car accident. This cast a huge shadow over the band, and it took them over three years to decide to actually go and record this album without their fallen bandmate. Ultimately, it was decided that they would honor Dageth and record the album as a final statement from Blood Stained Dusk, with a friend from the black metal industry, former Gorgoroth singer Pest, taking over as vocalist for the album.
Fast forward to late 2008, and Moribund Records releases the final saga in the history of Blood Stained Dusk, the powerful and quite epic Black Faith Inquisition. If you like some of the recent US black metal acts such as Sothis, Abigail Williams, or classic acts such as Dimmu Borgir, Cradle of Filth, Satyricon, and Emperor, then you will no doubt enjoy this CD. Plenty of orchestral keyboards adorn these eight tracks, Pest's deliciously evil growls the perfect fit for these bombastic pieces, and you can expect a plethora of crushing guitar riffs and relentless drum blasts as well. Though there's no shortage of brutality, many of these songs are quite melodic, the keyboards and tremelo picked riffs creating a symphonic soundscape that's quite engaging, tunes such as "Coven Of The Dying Sun" and "Ashes From A Burning Heaven" are simply epic in scope and delivery. Then you have the majestic death march that is "Conquering The Avarice Of Mortality", a pummeling slice of classic styled black metal with just enough orchestrations and doomy atmosphere to add to the variety factor.
Will this be just a final tribute to Dageth, or will Blood Stained Dusk continue on creating glorious black metal like they have on Black Faith Inquisition? Only time will tell, but in the meantime this is a CD that you should not miss.
