Composer Peter Fallowell says that his CD Journey To The Nesting Place took 16 years to produce. He also says that this work should be thought of as a modern day Symphony. While there is cohesiveness to the overall project, to call this piece a symphony is really stretching the use of the term.
This work is based on the multi instrumental talents of Peter and the vocals of Cherie Emmitt. This two along with bass player Tom Allen make up Multi Fuse. Fallowell has produced a work here that is very enjoyable with its progressive feel that takes you back to the early days of The Alan Parsons Project but infuses it with his jazz background. Combine that with the melancholy vocals of Emmitt and you have an album that straddles the fences between the worlds of these genres in a very mellow way.
Yes, this is what I would call a very quiet album. The use of the instrumentation is at times sparse and has the effect of putting you in a trance like state. As in the very aptly named "Hypnotise" where you might find yourself getting lost in the slowly paced, mesmerizing keyboards and hypnotic vocals of Emmitt.
Multi Fuse goes a bit more up tempo for the song "Day To Day/Your World". This combination piece is a tantalizing song especially when it goes into the second half where the melancholy mood is enhanced by the vocals of Emmitt. Once again the keyboard driven work has a light progressive feel that while not exceptional by any means, is an unobtrusive piece of music that is quite nice to have playing in the background.
"Answer You" is a song that falls into the category of repetitive. Leaning more toward the world of Brit pop with it's airy chorus, this is one that returns to its main theme so often, it gets a bit irritating by the end. This is one of the times you will be happy for a skip/mute button.
Multifuse ends this disc with the musical suite entitled "Yours Again". Brought to you in six parts this twenty six minute work is a very strong finish. Taking the listener through a multitude of styles Multifuse proves with this piece there is some real talent in the band and Fallowell has the ability to create very good music but still there is the specter of Alan Parsons floating through this whole work.
I cannot say that I found anything wrong with this disc. The music is very calming and soothing but it is infected with the dreaded, I have heard it all before disease. Mildly entertaining, it is great music to play in the background while enjoying your favorite leisure activity.
