More than just another bunch of mask wearing weirdoes, Dr Slaggleberry might be one of the most innovative bands to emerge from the UK in the past couple of years. Crushingly intense metal instrumentals make up Tuc Into The Tar!, a three track EP by the bizarre trio. Recorded live for radio station XFM, Tuc Into The Tar! seeks to build on the favourable reaction to their debut EP from earlier in 2008. You could describe it as experimental modern metal but the bottom line is that all three tracks feature intricate riffing and regular shifts in tempo with just enough subtle melodic hooks to broaden their appeal. Pick of the three is 'Tails of the Blind Donkey' for which the promo video has been seeing good rotation on Metal TV show The Pitz. A ferocious opening gives way to a delicate, understated mid-section breakdown before kicking back into overdrive with a pounding rhythm.
This is a band well worth keeping an eye on and it will be interesting to see just how far they can take the format. With live dates currently being booked for June expect to hear plenty more about the Doctors as we move through 2009.
