Devian: God to the Illfated

Former Marduk members Legion and Emil Dragutinovik, along with their cohorts Joinus, Tomas Nilsson, and Roberth Karlsson, better known to the world now as Devian, have wasted no time delivering their sophomore CD, titled God to the Illfated. Much like their 2007 debut Ninewinged Serpent, Devian have put together some splendid thrashy death/black metal here, much more melodic and accessible than what Legion and Emil used to record with Marduk, and it's safe to say that this new one is even more solid than their debut. Produced by none other than Peter Tagtgren, God to the Illfated is a professional sounding platter of extremity, thick and crunchy riffs permeating every song, with Emil's kick drum & blast beat patterns constantly impressing at each juncture. Legion is really starting to show his true range of vocal styles-the guy has delivered solid growls and screams in the past, but with the more melodic fare of Devian he's able to add in plenty of other textures and tones rather than your standard maniacal black metal screeching. Listen to his evil screams and gutteral growls paired off against Joinus' clean passages on "Saintbleeder", or his commanding attack on the juggernaut "I'm the Pariah" and death/black metal hybrids "Mask of Virtue" and "Assailent".

Though the band isn't really breaking any new ground here, each song is so well crafted, and delived with such intensity, it really matters not that Devian isn't reinventing the wheel on God to the Illfated. Want some speedy 80's styled thrash with plenty of complex riffery, evil vocals, and wild drumming? Check out the raging title track. In the mood for slower, ominous death metal? Go no further than "Summerdeath". How about some symphonic black metal? Then be sure to check out the epic "When The Vultures Have Left". There's really something for every extreme metal fan here, Devian delivering a quality release that's sure to convince the metal community that they are here to stay and ready for world domination.
