In this day and age where faster is better comes a hyper fast Grind/Death Metal release from Harpoon. Their new CD, Double Gnarly/Triple Suicide (Interloper Records) is a supersonic hodgepodge of digital Metal that simply misses the mark on all fronts.
This 12 song CD clocking in at just over 23 minutes has taken 23 minutes of my life that I will never get back. Harpoon are a drum machine toting Metal project with scratchy fuzzed out guitars with programmed drum machine patterns that are so fast that they must have at least sprained a finger or two in making these drum beats. Add in some badly recorded feedback at almost every guitar stop and you get a mess of a CD. Also throw in inaudible caterwauling of what must have been a murder of some sort and this makes up Double Gnarly/Triple Suicide.
Good idea of a drum machine project that two musicians (Dean Costello and Toney Vast-Binder) could experiment with, but terrible results. 12 songs ranging from 5 minutes to 25 seconds, left me just waiting for the CD to be over. Thank god it's only 23 minutes long. I WILL say that every now and then a Slayer-ish riff will pop up and that's pretty cool, but it wasn't enough to save this project. I guess if you're into bad Death Metal made with a drum machine, this might be up your alley. But for me, I'll head down the other street.
