German Jazzcore experimentalist's The Season Standard have finally gotten their CD, Squeeze Me Ahead Of Line, released here in the USA. Haven't heard of them? Neither have I, but I'm glad that I now have. What a fantastic band. Made up of Rock, Jazz/Fusion, Electronika, heavy experimentalization and improv, these guys are simply killer! This quartet bends and shapes categories like no one I have heard before. For a reference point, think The Mars Volta, King Crimson and Porcupine Tree meets Miles Davis with Pop vocals.
Squeeze Me Ahead Of Line features 9 songs with a running time just under 50 minutes and is a great listen. Now, I'll be honest, at first listen I thought the vocals were a woman's! But with further spins found that they are NOT, but rather by Mathias Jähnig, who also doubles on guitar. His vocals are so soothing and beautifully stated. Check out what is in store for this entire pleasure ride with CD opener, "A Seadog Grotesque". Eerie and spacious with all members firing on all cylinders, this thumping romp of a song is simply infectious. Upbeat and inspiring with all world musicianship, The Season Standard should be heard! Amazing is all that comes to mind. From the avant-garde Funk of "12 Inches Nose Makes Disco" to the wacky riffing that would make Frank Zappa happy of "Kaira", each track just offers some sort of incredibly cool music. It is hard to believe that these guys are able to keep up with one another, with each individual performance being nothing short of virtuoso.
The Season Standard is composed of drummer Simon Beyer, bassist Robert Koppisch, Guitarist and Organist Daniel Scherf and Singer/Guitarist Mathias Jähnig. These guys are nothing short of amazing. Not just for the musician types out there, Squeeze Me Ahead Of Line features an endless supply of beautifully interwoven and complicated rhythm's with fantastic and stirringly complex & bouncy Jazzy guitar mastery. The Season Standard are a group that deserve attention and with this wonderful release, I hope they get it. A truly GREAT record!
