Basking in the wake of Frank Zappa, Mats/Morgan take up the mantle and proliferate Zappa's pioneering efforts of expanding rock's musical envelope. Swedish wunderkinds Mats Öberg (keyboards) and Morgan Ĺgren (drums) have reissued their debut effort from 1995 boasting a lengthy bonus track.
The opening track "I See You," hints at an eastern melody intertwined in a "musical notebook" of idea "noodling." A interesting musical interlude breaks the "demo" feel of the track. My favorite track is an eerie little ditty named "Guardian Witch" with its atonal sequencing juxtaposed by insanely percussive slap-bass, lilting vocal harmonies, "laughing man" looped sample, and avant-garde guitar solo. "Fire and Audio" is the next stand out track as it is a jazz fusion tour de force, complete with innovative trumpets and Bill Bruford – Earthworks qualities. The remainder of the CD sounds like a collection of loose, improvisations recorded for prosperity. This CD is a noble start or introduction to the Mats/Morgan experience. Not for Everyone.
