It's been four years since Chronoclast, but the time away hasn't slowed these Canadian's down, as Buried Inside comes rampaging back with another platter of sonic sludge on Spoils of Failure. This is epic stuff, eight tracks (no titles by the way) of brooding psychedelia, sludge, and post rock bleakness, tortured vocals doing battle with slow, bone crunching riffs and meandering lead guitar forays. In a way, many of the tracks just segue into each other, so it's really best to listen to this one all the way through. If I had to pick some standouts, it would be the ISIS influenced monster that is track "III", complete with tasty tremelo picked guitar lines, crashing drum work, dirge laden riffs, and agonizing growls. The weaving guitar patterns of "IV" and the extreme metal bombast of "I" are some other highlights to this dark, depressing, yet menacingly enjoyable new release from this band. If you are into doomier fare, then go no further than the massive sounds of track "V", but for the most part it's all about the dark, atmospheric sludge, the brooding, apocalyptic mood that this band creates, dripping all over tracks "VI-VIII", that is what Buried Inside is all about. Overall, this is very solid material, and worth checking out.
