Jolly: The Revolutionary Cult Demo Finally Hits The U.S. (EP)

Jolly are a modern rock band from New York and this is their debut E.P. Band members include Anadale (guitar, vocals), Mike Rudin (bass), Joe Reilly (keyboards, backing vocals) and Louis Abramson (drums). The press release I received states "The band's primary goal is to create music that will intrigue avid listeners without compromising accessibility". I could not agree more. This is really good stuff and after playing these three songs I kept wondering what a full album would sound like. By the way, their first full length album should be available in the spring of this year. Good news indeed. The band states influences such as Radiohead and Depeche Mode which to my ears is accurate. Aggressive guitar mixed with quiet almost dreamy sections makes for a captivating listen. I did hear a touch of Radiohead in the ambient parts. There is also an electronic vibe in these tunes that may reflect Depeche Mode's influence. For us prog lovers there is certainly an undercurrent of progressiveness found here that should satisfy many of our readers.

The crunchy chords and slightly processed vocals of "Carousel Of Whale" gets things going with a heavy start. Heavy riffage intertwined with softer sections and atmospheric keys is very effective. The dreamy beginning of "Downstream" with its soft keys, pleasing vocals, and great melody is another winner. I really like how they blend different atmospheres in their music creating varying moods and textures. My favourite has to be "Solstice" with it's combination of soaring vocals, interesting synth sounds and powerful guitar chords.

This is a short but rewarding listen and one that really got my attention. A very enjoyable slice of modern rock with a progressive twist. Lets hope for more of the same in a couple of months when their full length album is released.
