The nine songs on Terra Nocturne float in the hazy shadows of mellow Gilmour/Waters-era Pink Floyd — not that there's anything wrong with that. While it might be a little too sleepy for some tastes, this concept album of sorts inspired "during the course of one particularly lucid evening" (according to the liner notes) captures the essence of what a certain type of progressive-rock fan still wants to hear. Indeed, the 12-and-a-half-minute, sax-fueled "American Dream," which could be an outtake from Wish You Were Here, is powerful enough to make some men weep.
Vocalist/guitarist Lynn Stokes and the Texas-based Sol Surfers look more like a high-energy, bar-jammin' blues-rock outfit than classic progressive rockers. But these guys are for real. As proof, the Progressive Rock Hall of Fame (yes, there really is one — in Phoenix, Ariz.) selected Terra Nocturne's strong leadoff track "Sacred Moon's Light" to be featured on its first compilation CD, Soundscapes Volume 1.
