Edling, Leif: Songs Of Torment, Songs Of Joy

Doom Metal, its origins going back to the 70's with Black Sabbath, found within their style of metal and evolving in the 80's, with bands basing their sound around the style and hence creating the Doom genre, which continues today in various forms. You could say Doom metal is an equired taste, with its slower pace and heavy down tuned guitar sound, not exactly the most uplifting or upbeat style, but I for one certainly don't mind my share of it. This Doom metal release featured here is also a debut from Leif Edling, founder, bass player, and song writer of Candlemass, the very influential Swedish Doom masters. Edling draws on his many years of experience and releases this Doom laden CD, Songs Of Torment, Songs Of Joy.

Leif handles bass and lead vocals here, and joining him are guitarists Björn Eriksson and Chris Laney, keyboard player Carl Westbolm and drummer Lars Skold. Songs Of Torment, Songs Of Joy is a powerful atmospheric album, lots of bottom ended heavy riffage and some additional organ sounds intertwined within, adding to the epic feel of the music. Leif's voice complements the music well, both spoken and sung, his bass playing is also very effective, the drumming is restrained but very appropriate and quite powerful. "Butterfly", the shortest track, is basically a bass only number, and "Nautlis" is the longest, being a cool doom paced instrumental piece, and most fitting closer for this CD.

If you're after some good Epic Doomster style metal, then look out for Leif Edling's Songs Of Torment, Songs Of Joy.
