Axxis: The Big Thrill

While they may seem to be a real throwback to the 80's, Axxis gives you just what you would expect with the release of the album The Big Thrill. 1993 maybe the year this disc was originally put out but you will be taken back another decade with their classic power metal. Although this disc did not give me that big of a thrill, it does provide you with a chance to do all the fist pumping, noggin nodding and air guitar moves in your repertoire.

Starting off with the anthem like "Better World/Livin In The Dark", Axxis at this time still reminds me of 90125 era Yes. Vocalist Bernhard Weiss sounds very much like Jon Anderson on this song and the whole feel is one that will make you think of the "Owner of a Lonely Heart" version of Yes.

The band not only gives you a good dose of the vintage hair metal of the day but along with that there are the obligatory power ballads. Yes plural, not one but three that will try and get you flicking your Bic. "Stay Don't Leave Me" is the kind of piano power ballad that is designed with melting the female heart. "Love Doesn't Know Any Distance" is the kind of song that will give Weiss plenty of opportunity to show that rock star anguish. "Waterdrop" is a syrupy work that provides time for a bathroom break while listening to this disc.

The rest of the album gives you just what you would expect from Axxis. Catchy melodies with sing-a-long choruses that will keep you entertained while not taxing your grey matter in the least. This is old fashion rock that's main purpose is to keep body parts from holding still and it succeeds.

All in all, this is not a bad work. It's just not very inspiring or very much different than a thousand others out there.
