In 1995 Brutality unleashed their vision of the end of the world called When The Sky Turns Black. Thanks to Metal Mind Productions, you can once again hear their death metal view on the apocalypse. This re-release is one of those discs where you might wonder why it isn't in your collection in the first place.
This was the second release from the Tampa Florida natives and it shows a band that has really come into its own. Combining Scott Reigel's powerful growl with the hellacious dual guitar onslaught of Don Gates and Bryan Hipp, Brutality proves that there is a place for melody and style in the world of death metal.
Opening the album with the wicked title track "When The Sky Turns Black" followed by the equally brutal "Race Defects". Brutality defines death metal with their face melting onslaught. From there the band gives you the thing that makes this much more than the run of the mill growling metal. The very melodic instrumental "Awakening" is a tasty breather before they once again pound you senseless with a demonic version of Black Sabbath's "Electric Funeral".
From there the band gives you a really dynamic blend that makes you want to come back for more. They carry you to the last days with a superior meshing of their heavy, vicious metal and a melodic quality that is normally lacking in this genre. For my money, this is as good as any purchase you can make in this type of music. They came up with a sound that could very well be the soundtrack to the last days of earth!
