Laney, Chris: Pure

The multi-talented producer, engineer, songwriter and musician Chris Laney finally gets around to releasing his long awaited debut solo album. The last time Laney was on my radar was with Randy Piper's Animal with whom he cut two first class albums, Violent New Breed and Virus. Laney made a key contribution to this collaboration with the ex-WASP guitarist and for anyone who enjoyed these two discs then Pure will surely be another thumbs up. There is a definite 80's Hair Metal / Hard Rock influence with some of the huge choruses that were favoured by Def Leppard and much of The Scorpions and Kiss' work from that particular decade. The Kiss connection is added to by the presence of Bruce Kulick as one of the songwriters and the use of rhythm section Nalle Påhlsson and J. Koleberg on bass and drums respectively who together with Laney make up Kyss, apparently Sweden's longest running Kiss tribute band.

Whilst some of the influences may date back a little one aspect that is undoubtedly modern is the production which, as you would expect from someone with Laney's credentials is flawless throughout. The lyrics are quite direct with bitter titles such as "I Hate Yer Guts" and "Pissed At What Ya Missed" not needed a great deal of explanation, Laney taking on a very personal approach. With catchy hooks, driving riffs and well executed solos very much the formula here you can pretty much anticipate what is coming next at any given moment and there is little in the way of surprises. The mid tempo "The Stranger In You" (featuring Kulick) and Queen-esque ballad "Skin on Skin" are soaraway highlights and this is one album that does exactly what it says on the box.
